Here are three tips to help you better achieve your goals for 2022.

By now, you’ve probably already set your goals for 2022, and you might even have a plan in place to achieve them. Perhaps you’re like my client—let’s call her Gloria Goalsetter. Gloria used to always set lots of goals at the beginning of the year. It seemed like her to-do list was endless.

She would go to work on her plan and head towards her health goals, but then she switched to working on her career goals. She was constantly multitasking, and by the end of the year when she did her review, she realized she hadn’t accomplished much of anything. This seemed to happen continuously, but why was that?

Well, Gloria lacked one key element in goal achievement: focus. Extraordinary results are directly determined by how narrow you make your focus. Joy and success come when you shine a spotlight on what matters the most and focus your attention on that alone. When you’re constantly jumping from one thing to the next, you’re not ever really getting anything done, and that’s exactly what Gloria was experiencing.

Here are a few tips that I gave Gloria to help her increase her focus:

1. Declutter both your external and internal environments. By external, I mean, clear your work area and make sure it’s conducive to maintaining focus. For internal clutter, recommend doing a daily brain dump, where you simply take out your journal and just get everything that’s on your mind out on paper.

2. Use a timer. This could be a physical timer or one on your smartphone. Train your brain to be hyper-focused; pick a task for yourself to complete in no more than 50 minutes and set your timer. While that timer is going, work only on that task and focus on nothing else. When the timer goes off, take a 10-minute break and then start the next task.

3. Eliminate distractions. Close all the apps on your phone, close all the windows on your computer, turn off your notifications, and put your phone out of sight.

“Extraordinary results are directly determined by how narrow you make your focus. ”

After implementing these tips and a few others, Gloria Goalsetter has become a master at getting things done. The same is possible for you!
