Here’s how “small” acts of kindness can have a huge ripple effect.

It’s the holiday season, which is the most joyous time of the year for a lot of people. For others, this season can be very challenging.

How can we help? Start by spreading some joy. Show concern and thoughtfulness toward others. Random acts of kindness during this time of year can be especially rewarding and make someone’s day a little brighter. Not only does a single kind act brighten the day of the person who receives it, but kindness also benefits the giver.

“There’s no such thing as a small act of kindness.”

What are some of the benefits of kindness?

Doing good will make you feel good. Psychology Today reports that kindness reduces stress and lowers anxiety and depression.

Boost your health. Kindness releases oxytocin, responsible for lowering blood pressure and activates the vagus nerve, which controls inflammation in the body.

You’ll live longer. Studies show those who are kind and do good for others tend to live longer than those who don’t.

It only takes a second to be kind to someone. Try one or more of these suggestions throughout the holidays:

Hug your loved ones and tell them you love them

Buy a few extra groceries and drop them off at the nearest food bank

Smile at strangers and say hello

Write a note of praise or gratitude to someone who has helped you

Pay for the coffee or meal of the person behind you in line

Challenge yourself to discover new ways to show random acts of kindness. Remember, there’s no such thing as a small act of kindness. Every act of kindness creates a ripple effect.
