Never underestimate the power of your own thoughts.

Experts estimate that as humans, our brains offer us approximately 3,000 thoughts per hour—that’s almost one thought every second! However, thoughts have no power by themselves. It’s only when we actively pay attention to our thoughts that they become powerful.

What you think directly influences how you feel, how you feel drives your behavior, and how you behave defines who you are and what you experience in life (i.e., your results).

“What we choose to think determines the outcome of our lives.”

For example, if you constantly give attention to the thought, “I’m bad with money,” your mind goes to work to give you all the evidence for how you’re bad with money. You may experience feelings of discouragement or guilt. Your actions probably include buying things you don’t need, not paying bills on time, or not tracking your spending. Ultimately, you create the result of being bad with money.

As one of my mentors, Brooke Castillo, teaches us, we can train our minds to think in ways that bring us positive emotions and positive results. It’s not just what we think that determines the outcome of our lives, but also what we choose to think brings us everything we desire and more.

Here are a few tips on how to shift your thoughts:

Refine your focus

The power to achieve anything lies in your focus. The more you can focus your thoughts on something, the more likely you’ll be able to achieve it. Intentionally direct and refine your focus to help guide you in the right direction.

Avoid negativity like the plague

Negative thinking will lead us nowhere fast. Do what it takes to avoid negativity. There’s true power in the positive energy of good and pure thoughts. But there’s also catastrophe in negative thinking. Avoid negative thinking like the plague because like attracts like.

Stay persistent

Training our minds takes time. Life can be tremendous, and at times it can seem downright unbearable. Stay strong, stay persistent, and keep pushing. The power is in your mind—it always has been and always will be.
